"Schatten-Licht" was an exhibition of objects and paintings by Uschi Lux, accompanied by a site-specific sound installation by Chris Williams (If / When). It was shown in the World War II-era bunker beneath the Martinskirche in Stuttgart, Germany from May 24 – June 8, 2019.
Uschi’s works included mixed media paintings/collages and delicate sculptures called “Kokons” (“Cocoons”), made of wire frames, cellulose skins, and other materials such as wood, string, and eggshells. The exhibition also contained a video documenting the burning of one of the Kokons.
Chris’s sound installation was based exclusively on recordings made for the exhibit. These included the sounds of objects being manipulated in Uschi’s studio and in the bunker, as well as urban field recordings made in the neighborhoods surrounding the two locations. Chris performed a live mix of the sounds during the show's Vernissage and Finnisage, and the 37-minute composition presented here was played at other times during opening hours.
By amplifying sounds associated with the genesis of "Schatten-Licht" and bringing them into dialogue with the world outside, the composition complemented the visual art on display in the bunker, adding another dimension to visitors’ experience of the unusual space. Heard today, the composition continues to offer an absorbing journey for the ears that transcends the specific time and place in which it was made.
